Govt launches SEA to assess marine technology development

Marine energy is to be a key area of focus in a new Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) which is being launched by the government.
David Kidney, minister for energy and climate change, has suggested that the assessment will look at how tidal and wave technologies could be adopted more in the future.
Mr Kidney commented: "The exercise I''m launching ... will help us identify opportunities for new development, whilst taking into account any possible impacts on the marine environment."

The politician went on to highlight the potential opportunities that bodies of water offer to the UK when it comes to the generation of renewable power.
He made his remarks during the recent Renewable UK Wave and Tidal Conference 2010.
The new SEA will look at the potential for marine energy developments off the coasts of England and Wales.
Meanwhile, Mitsubishi Power Systems Europe and the government recently signed a memorandum of understanding which could lead to more wind energy investment in the near future.
