Speaking about the Higher Education Funding Council for England''s (HEFCE) proposals, Sally Hunt, general secretary of the UCU, believes that research should not simply be motivated by financial considerations

She noted: "History has taught us that some of the biggest breakthroughs have come from speculative research and it is wrong to try and measure projects purely on their economic potential."

Meanwhile, last month, Ms Hunt expressed concern at higher education funding cut proposals which were outlined in a letter that was sent to the HEFCE by the country''s business secretary Peter Mandelson.ADNFCR-2386-ID-19550173-ADNFCR
