A favourable view of farmers is currently being adopted by a large number of consumers in the UK, NFU research suggests.

A large number of the country's residents are viewing UK farmers in a favourable light, new figures have suggested.

Three-quarters of those polled in a survey published by the National Farmers' Union (NFU) are said to be adopting a favourable or very favourable opinion of farmers.

According to the organisation, this compares with the figure of 68 per cent which was recorded five years ago.

The farming industry has the support of the country's general population, Peter Kendall, president of the NFU, commented following the publication of the survey.

However, he added: "Not many people realise we are providing the building blocks for our food and drink manufacturing sector that is worth £22 billion to our national economy."

Last month, the NFU also confirmed that it is set to offer support to the forthcoming Great Milk Debate, alongside the National Federation of Women's Institutes.
