Equine vets and owners across the UK have been asked to participate in the Animal Health Trust's (AHT) equine grass sickness surveillance scheme.

The AHT is urging participation in research in an attempt to find a way of preventing the fatal illness, which has a mortality rate of more than 90 per cent.

AHT scientists are working with Liverpool and Edinburgh universities and the Equine Grass Sickness Fund and intend to analyse data collected from across the UK.

It is hoped that the data will yield revealing conclusions about the welfare impact of the illness.

Georgette Kluiters, grass sickness research assistant at the AHT, explained that April to June is when cases or the sickness tend to peek.

She said: "We're appealing to owners whose horses have suffered with the illness, or vets who have treated horses with the illness at any time throughout the year, to let us know.

"It is never too late to submit a case - your information is vital."

The AHT offers a number of clinical services for horses and other animals including orthapaedics, dermatology and animal sports therapy.ADNFCR-2386-ID-19234878-ADNFCR
