Ambition of GCSE students 'needs to be supported by ministers'

Ministers have been encouraged to support younger members of the population, following the publication of the country's GCSE results.

With young people across the country being given their GCSE results this week, one expert from the Trades Union Congress (TUC) believes that ministers should support their future ambitions.
According to the organisation's general secretary Brendan Barber, cuts to education and skills should not hamper the efforts that students are making in order to succeed.
Mr Barber commented: "Successful youngsters could still be forced out of education early and into a non-existent jobs market, where they will join the growing army of frustrated NEETs [not in education, employment or training]".
Cuts that are being planned by the coalition government must not be made in a reckless manner, Mr Barber went on to say.
Across the UK, 69.1 per cent of GCSE students are said to have attained grades between A* and C this year.
The publication of the figures follows the release of the country's A-Level results earlier in the month.
