Date posted: 16 Sep 2009

Many UK workers have become increasingly aware of their employment rights, according to new research published by the government.

Conducted by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), the 2008 Fair Treatment at Work Survey suggests that 78 per cent of the working public now feel well informed about their rights, marking a 13 per cent rise on 2005 figures.

Problems concerning issues like working hours and annual leave have notably fallen over recent years, the survey reveals.

Lord Young, minister for employment relations, believes that progress has been made among both employers and workers.

However, he added more support still needs to be given to some vulnerable workers who may not be fully aware of their rights.

He said: "The government will be announcing further help for vulnerable workers later this month."

Separate research commissioned by BIS recently suggested that many people feel their consumer rights are being ignored during the economic downturn.ADNFCR-2386-ID-19361698-ADNFCR
