BPF opposes 'clampdown' on multiple occupation homes

Date posted: 12 Aug 2009

Proposed government plans to restrict the creation of houses of multiple occupation (HMO) have met with opposition from property groups including the British Property Federation (BPF).

According to the BPF, ministers want to clampdown on homes that are rented by six or more unrelated people to reduce anti-social behaviour and complaints about noise and litter.

However, the BPF is speaking out against the plans, in collaboration with the National Landlords Association, the NUS and the Residential Landlords Association.

It believes that by restricting HMOs, rents may rise and people like students and young professionals could be priced out of areas.

Liz Peace, BPF chief executive, commented that the planning system should not be used to try and reduce anti-social behaviour.

She added: "Only a tiny fraction of places suffer from high concentrations of HMOs and using a broad brush approach to deal with different issues relating to anti-social behaviour makes no sense."

Certain types of higher risk HMOs already have to meet mandatory requirements in order to gain licenses.ADNFCR-2386-ID-19306911-ADNFCR
