Planning inspectors have ruled that land can be released from the city's green belt to allow the Cambridge University project to continue its development.

Under the plans, around 3,000 new homes will be constructed, along with new student accommodation.

A number of environmental measures are set to be introduced into the homes, with renewable energy resources aiming to meet the government's low-carbon requirements.

The action plans for the project were designed by Cambridge City Council and South Cambridgeshire District Council.

Sian Reid, climate change and growth executive councillor at the city council, said that the organisation now looks forward to working with the university.

She added: "The city council is extremely pleased that this plan has been found sound and the inspectors have upheld such an innovative and forward-thinking approach to planning for sustainable design and construction, and that Cambridge has been at the forefront of developing this."
