Farmed environment campaign ''aiming to protect biodiversity''

A new campaign, backed by a variety of organisations, has been launched to improve the farming sector''s focus on biodiversity and wildlife protection.

The Campaign for the Farmed Environment will see members of the farming industry work with ministers to support the introduction of measures such as agri-environment initiatives.

Hilary Benn, the government''s environment secretary, commented that it is important farmers are encouraged to preserve the wildlife of their area.

Hilary Benn, the government''s environment secretary, commented that it is important farmers are encouraged to preserve the wildlife of their area.

He said: "Two thirds of England''s farmers have so far put part of their land into an agri-environment scheme and the campaign''s challenge is to build on this excellent start."

The campaign will also aim to raise awareness of water quality protection among the country''s farmers.

Peter Kendall, president of the National Farmers'' Union, added that by developing healthy environments, farmers will be helping to create a more "sustainable future".
