Female couples to receive new birth registration rights

Female couples in the UK are set to receive new birth registration rights, the Home Office has announced, following changes made to the Registration of Births and Deaths Regulations 1987.
The changes will give female civil partners the same rights as their married heterosexual counterparts when it comes to registering the birth of a child who has been conceived using fertility treatment methods.
As a result of the amendments, the names of both female parents will now be included on the birth certificate of their child.

Those female couples who are not in civil partnerships are also set to receive improved rights relating to the registering of births following fertility treatment.
In future, such couples will be registered using the same methods currently applied to unmarried heterosexual couples.
The new regulation amendments will apply to couples who have used fertility treatment procedures since April 6th of this year.
Aiming to protect people from discrimination, the Home Office assesses people''s rights to see how equality and diversity can be promoted more in society.
