Relatively few schools are taking the opportunity to convert into academies this month, according to one NASUWT expert.

Few schools in the UK are planning to convert into academies this September, the general secretary of one teaching union has noted.

According to NASUWT's general secretary Chris Keates, the coalition government's efforts to promote its academies scheme do not seem to have resulted in a large take-up among the nation's schools.

The expert has strong beliefs as to why this has been the case.

He stated: "The coalition government has misjudged the situation and its tactics have failed. Those promoting academy status are bankrupt of strong, persuasive arguments."

Mr Keates went as far to suggest that ministers should seriously rethink the current academies initiative they are running and consider scrapping "this flawed ideology".

Government plans to introduce more academies in various regions the country were this week welcomed by the new Fulfilling Potential, The Business Role in Education report which was published by the Confederation of British Industry.
