More houses are still required to tackle the demand for social housing in the UK, according to one expert.
Figures published by the National House-Building Council (NHBC) recently revealed that in the third quarter of 2009, new house building applications rose by four per cent on the previous quarter.
In total, 24,136 applications are said to have been made during the three-month period.

Nevertheless, Brian Berry, director of external affairs at the Federation of Master Builders (FMB), believes that there is still a long way to go before house building problems are solved.
He said: "While the latest statistics from NHBC provide at least some encouragement, it cannot be seen to be the beginning of the end for the housing crisis.
"The fact still remains that there will be around five million people waiting for social housing by next year."
He added that future production must be greatly increased to cope with demand for housing in the UK.
