The Food Standards Agency is to set up a new food analysis system, which would be used to test produce for their levels of sweeteners and evaluate whether they are safe for use and consumption.
According to the government, the move would help to safeguard the public and enhance its strategy to provide consumer protection in regard to the levels of additives in food.
The analytical method for the detection of sweeteners in food will include tests for saccharin, aspartame and sucralose.
"Intense sweeteners are often used in combination in foodstuffs. Therefore a method to simultaneously extract and determine the currently permitted intense sweeteners and, if possible, cyclamic acid, should be developed," the organisation said in a statement.
It comes after the newly-created Task Force on Farming Regulation revealed that it is providing people with the opportunity to flag up rules which they deem to be overly complicated in their current form.
