A government consultation is to be launched in order to look at how a body might be set up to ensure that the new Groceries Supply Code of Practice (GSCOP) is complied with.
According to Kevin Brennan, the country''s consumer minister, the exact role of the proposed enforcement body will be focused on during the consultation process.
He commented: "The next step is to consult formally on its nature and role, to ensure that all interested parties can make their views heard and that informed decisions are made."

The consultation process is expected to be launched next month, once the GSCOP has been introduced.
Peter Kendall, president of the National Farmers'' Union (NFU), has given his backing to the announcement that ministers are to look into the creation of a GSCOP enforcer.
He has noted that the NFU has been campaigning for such an organisation for a number of years.
