Lord Mandelson commented that the campus should help strengthen the country''s bioscience industry in the coming years.
He said: "Innovation drives commercial invention [... ] and this joint investment by the public, private and charitable sectors recognises that innovation will be decisive in Britain''s recovery."
The project will encourage firms to work together and share skills in order to create new healthcare innovations.
Speaking at the recent Innovate09 event, Lord Mandelson also suggested that UK universities should be encouraged to team up with businesses in order to apply their research to the commercial sector.
