Mac users are increasingly being targeted by criminals through the use of malware, an expert believes.

According to the Trend Micro solutions architect Rik Ferguson, the last 12 to 18 month period has seen a marked rise in the number of malware threats that are capable of affecting Macs.

Criminals are likely to be targeting both Macs and normal PCs with malware technology because they are finding opportunities to make money, Mr Ferguson went on to say.

However, the expert did offer some advice to those who are concerned about the threats posed by online criminals.

He feels that computer users should avoid clicking on links if they are unsure about the sources they have received them from.

As part of its efforts to deal with cyber attacks, it was recently confirmed that McAfee is to be purchased by computer chip producer Intel.

The deal is expected to amount to $7.68 billion.
