A number of volunteering managers in the UK do not appear to be gaining access to training opportunities, research from Skills - Third Sector suggests.

Further training needs to be offered to people who are responsible for the management of volunteers, it has been suggested.

As many as 42 per cent of those volunteer managers queried in the Valuing Volunteer Management Skills report published by Skills - Third Sector say they have not been offered training which might support their role.

More training opportunities are said to be desired by many of those who were queried as part of the organisation's study.

Skills - Third Sector chief executive Julie Wilkes feels that volunteering is likely to play an important role in the coalition government's plans to create a 'Big Society' in the UK.

Following the publication of the volunteer management report, she commented: "Skills - Third Sector is drawing up a skills strategy which gives top priority to creating flexible and affordable learning opportunities for these key managers."

Cambridge, York and Leeds are among the cities where members of the Skills - Third Sector team are currently based.
