Figures show third straight year of attendance increases.

Race course attendances at venues across the UK have increased for the third straight year, with 2011 becoming a record 12 months for the industry.

Paul Bittar, chief executive officer of the British Horseracing Authority, said a record 6.15 million visitors headed to racecourses in 2011, topping the previous high that was set back in 2004.

The rise in attendance was attributed to a concerted effort from the BHA to develop a central PR presence and to promote the sport more fully, with Mr Bittar claiming the figures speak for themselves in terms of the success of the initiative so far.

As a result, further efforts are to be made over the coming months to increase partnerships between venues, organisers, broadcasters and advertisers in order to make 2012 a year that will be equally successful.

"It is testament to the enduring appeal of a day at the races and also to the value of more focused and creative marketing in these challenging economic times."

He argued: "As a measure of the sport's popularity it is excellent news. However, it does also highlight the discrepancy with the sport's overall financial health and it underlines how the current levy system is failing British racing when attendances break new records, yet the levy income continues to decline."

As a result, Mr Bittar noted the organisation is keen to work alongside other key industry bodies to address these issues, with the reform of the present levy system one of his top priorities for the coming year.

Earlier this month, the BHA announced its annual World Thoroughbred Rankings, with British-trained Frankel coming out as the number one steed for the last 12 months.

She achieved a score of 136 and became the joint-top rated colt on record, tying with Sea The Stars - who achieved the standing in 2009.
