New pleural plaque law changes proposed

People suffering from pleural plaques may soon be able to claim compensation if a recommended change to the law is implemented.
Finance and personnel minister Nigel Dodds is set to propose a change in the law to allow sufferers to claim compensation.
Pleural plaques are scarring on the lungs which are benign, but which indicate exposure to asbestos.
They do not cause the development of asbestos-related conditions, but are an indicator of increased risk.

Mr Dodds explained that he has decided to recommend a change to the law to allow those negligently exposed to asbestos to claim compensation from employers.
He said: "We now know just how dangerous asbestos is, but for many years it was used in a range of commercial products, and even in buildings, because of its resistance to heat.
"Clearly, we cannot turn back the clock in terms of preventing exposure to asbestos, but we can ensure that the consequences of the exposure are acknowledged and addressed."
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recently launched a new campaign to raise awareness of asbestos-related illness, revealing that every week more than 30 people die from exposure to the substance.
