NFU: "Smarter technologies" needed for sustainable food production

Date posted: 03 Dec 2009

New technologies will need to be adopted by those operating within the UK''s agricultural industry, in order to produce food supplies in a more sustainable manner.

That is according to Peter Kendall of the National Farmers'' Union, who believes that people should be wary of listening to sound bite solutions to climate change which may fail to get to grips with the problem.

Mr Kendall, who acts as the union''s president, commented: "The idea of giving up meat or reducing our national herds and flocks is unnecessary.

"Instead we need to see more investment made in agricultural research and development."

Mr Kendall went on to say that he welcomes the recent launch of the English Beef and Lamb Executive''s (EBLEX) new Change in the Air document.

EBLEX has suggested that livestock producers should not be disproportionately accused of damaging the environment because of the carbon emissions their operations may produce. ADNFCR-2386-ID-19491292-ADNFCR
