As many as one-third of pay settlements may have been frozen in the UK this year, according to new research.

Meanwhile, pay freezes are said to have been less prevalent among firms operating in areas like food retail and pharmaceuticals.

Ken Mulkearn, who acted as editor of the latest IDS pay report, believes companies may look to increase the pay of their employees in 2010 if they have offered zero awards this year.

He commented: "So while prospects for the economy remain uncertain, many firms will be planning ahead for a possible recovery in 2010."

According to IDS, 2009 has seen a median pay settlement level of 2.3 per cent.
