Organic farming 'motivated by cost rather than morals'

Farmers' use of organic fertilisers is unlikely to remain widespread for any length of time because organic agriculture is a "niche" area, it has been claimed.

Input advisor at the National Farmers' Union (NFU) Hannah Moule explained that organic minerals have become cheaper over the last couple of years.

She explained that as artificial phosphate and potash fertilisers have become more expensive, farmers have had to think harder about how to fertilise their crops.

Input advisor at the National Farmers' Union (NFU) Hannah Moule explained that organic minerals have become cheaper over the last couple of years.

She explained that as artificial phosphate and potash fertilisers have become more expensive, farmers have had to think harder about how to fertilise their crops.

However, she noted that most farmers are more concerned about the end result rather than whether they use artificial or organic fertilisers.

She explained: "There are some application differences, but in terms of the actual nutrients, it doesn't make that much of a difference whether it comes through manure or an artificial fertiliser."

Ms Moule also added that organic farming is unlikely to become a widespread trend, as its unlikely to be a sustainable way of feeding the population.

Last month, the NFU published its Campaign for the Farmed Environment to encourage farmers to address environmental concerns surrounding agricultural practice.ADNFCR-2386-ID-19191549-ADNFCR
