Race equality duty ''should apply to private sector employers''

Date posted: 20 Jan 2010

Private sector firms should be made to ensure that they are mindful of race equality when recruiting and promoting staff, according to the general secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC).

The TUC's Brendan Barber has suggested that inequality should not be tolerated in either the public or private spheres.

He commented: "An extension of the equality duty into the private sector would make those employers whose discriminatory views belong to another century change the way they operate."

However, Mr Barber did highlight the impact that the government''s race equality duty appears to have had on organisations operating within the country''s public sector.

He made his comments following the Tackling Race Inequality: A Statement on Race document which was revealed by John Denham, the government''s communities secretary, earlier in the month.

The publication looks at some of the measures that are still required to improve race equality in the UK.ADNFCR-2386-ID-19565353-ADNFCR
