The British Horseracing Authority has offered its support to a new industry policy on drugs and alcohol.

The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) has thrown its weight behind a new drugs and alcohol policy which will apply to those operating in the racing sector.

Workplace drug and alcohol use is something that the new policy is designed to crack down on, while it has also been created to help people with addiction issues gain support if they need it.

Terri Griffiths from Racing Welfare, one of the organisations behind the new policy, feels that its introduction is a welcome development.

In her role as head of welfare, she stated: "This policy is a product of determined co-operation amongst racing's key bodies and demonstrates their commitment to work together to support racing's people."

The National Trainers Federation and the National Association of Stable Staff are among the other organisations that are supporting the scheme, along with the Thoroughbred Breeders' Association.

A 24-hour helpline is one support service that Racing Welfare currently operates.
