UCU: Foreign countries seeing rewards for uni investment

Date posted: 20 Sep 2010

After investing in universities, a number of foreign nations are starting to see the benefits, a UCU expert has noted.

Published by Alison Gamble.

Countries such as South Korea are beginning to see the benefits of university investment, it has been suggested.

According to Sally Hunt, the general secretary of the University and College Union (UCU), more higher education investment will be needed in the UK so that the country can keep up with those overseas.

She stated: "The simple truth is that countries investing in higher education are being rewarded and they will be the key players in the global knowledge economy."

This issue is one that members of the coalition government need to address in the near future, Ms Hunt went on to say.

Her remarks follow the recent publication of the university world rankings by the Times Higher Education Supplement (THES).

Discussing the THES findings, the Universities UK president professor Steve Smith noted that the UK's higher education status is being threatened by competitors overseas who are keen to invest in their universities.
