UCU: Lack of funding responsible for university rush
Date posted: 22 Aug 2009
The government has failed to provide the higher education system with enough financial support in recent years, leading to a rush for university places, the University and College Union (UCU) suggests.
With record numbers of applications for some university courses in 2009, the UCU believes that ministers have not matched their ambitions for higher education with the funding required.
Sally Hunt, the UCU's general secretary, commented that the government has not done enough to make its widening participation agenda a success.

Sally Hunt, the UCU's general secretary, commented that the government has not done enough to make its widening participation agenda a success.
She said: "The government's decision to cap the numbers of student places at university this year and most likely permanently cap the ambition of thousands of potential students, marks the nadir of a policy which has become, in essence, the rationing of hope."
Ms Hunt added that ministers have not gone far enough in providing funding to the higher education system, which could see many young people now miss out on a university place.
A-level results published this week show an improvement in the number of pupils gaining A grades in their exams.
