Further public investment is required to deal with the large demand that currently exists for university places in England.
That is according to Universities UK''s (UUK) president, professor Steve Smith, who suggests that, in some cases, there may not be enough higher education places to go around in the summer of 2010.
Figures published earlier this month by UCAS revealed that 570,556 people had made applications for higher education courses by January 22nd.
Professor Smith now feels that funding should be granted to provide more student places.

He commented: "With this unprecedented demand for higher education courses, UUK believes that the case for continued public investment in higher education is overwhelming.
"This should take the form of the allocation of additional student numbers."
According to UCAS, the organisation''s latest figures point to a 106,389 increase in applications since last year, which equates to a growth of almost 23 per cent.
