Commenting on the case, family lawyer at Taylor Vinters Alexandra Gooden said: "This is a salutary lesson for spouses who have separated but never finalised their financial affairs.
"Despite the fact that the husband's assets derived from an inheritance received after the separation, the court reinforced the principle that, where fairness dictates, needs must be paramount.
"The wife had brought up their child with minimal support, leaving her financially disadvantaged. The court accepted that she needed a fund to provide her with long-term financial security."
It comes after 46-year-old Kim Walkden failed to win more divorce money from her former husband after his wealth increased.
She agreed a £481,000 payout when her husband's timber company had been performing badly, opting for the settlement rather than risk a fall in its share price.
