Knight Frank''s Liam Bailey believes that a variety of factors have encouraged people to make second home purchases in recent times, including the weakened pound and reduced interest rates.
Mr Bailey, head of residential research at the organisation, commented: "Looking forward to 2010, our view is that growth in demand ought to continue - but the potential growth in second home numbers will be determined by the supply of properties for sale."
The expert has also pointed out that second homes have proven to be popular investments in Devon''s South Hams region.
In total, the year 2009 saw a further 6,212 second homes recorded by Knight Frank in England.
