Social house building could decrease by 65 per cent this year, according to the National Housing Federation (NHF).
The organisation has suggested that as few as 20,390 homes could be built in 2010, with funding reductions and planning changes contributing to this development.
This would not help to address the size of the country's social housing waiting lists, the federation suggests, with 4.5 million people said to be seeking properties at the present time.
David Orr, chief executive of the NHF, commented that England cannot afford to cut back on house building.
He stated: "Unless the government takes steps to modify some of the policies recently announced we fear that the overall number of affordable homes built in subsequent years could fall to an even lower number."
The NHF is currently running a campaign which aims to encourage the UK's ministers to focus more of their attentions on the construction of social homes.
It is urging people to write to their local MP in order to raise awareness of this issue.
