Anaerobic digestion could offer a variety of benefits to the UK economy, the country's climate change minister has highlighted.

The UK economy might benefit in a number of ways from the continued development of anaerobic digestion systems, one member of the government believes.

According to Greg Barker, minister for climate change within the coalition, energy security is just one issue that energy from waste technology could help to address.

He stated: "In the face of the challenge to build an economy that cuts carbon emissions, which ensures energy security, and which creates green jobs to help bring back economic prosperity - anaerobic digestion ticks all of these boxes."

The politician went on to suggest that he is keen to see how this form of energy generation could be used more widely in the future.

Mr Barker's remarks follow a recent industry roundtable event relating to the issue of energy from waste.

The Anaerobic Digestion Round Table was co-chaired by Lord Henley, the government's environment minister.

Earlier this week, the Department of Energy and Climate Change also revealed that the government is allocating grant funding of £10 million to various offshore wind technology developments.
