The country's charities are likely to respond positively to Vodafone's latest text donation plans, it is believed.

According to the mobile network operator, SMS donations made by its users will be passed on in their entirety to charities if they total £1 or above.

Commenting on the organisation's decision, the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) chief executive John Low believes that it marks a welcome development.

He remarked: "Donating by text is popular because it is instant and easy for donors but in the past high charges have put donors and charities off."

Predicting the response of not for profit groups towards Vodafone's decision, Mr Low added: "Charities will celebrate this announcement."

A short code which is five digits long has now been set up in order to enable Vodafone customers to benefit from the firm's latest move.

CAF is a supporter of the Text Donation Campaign Group, which aims to reduce SMS donation charges in the UK.
