Charities 'must not bear brunt' of public sector cuts

The funding cuts that are likely to hit the public sector in the near future should not target the work of charitable organisations, the NCVO's chief executive suggests.

Charities should not bear the brunt of public sector funding cuts which are likely to occur in the near future, according to one expert.

The chief executive of the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO), Stuart Etherington, believes it is vulnerable members of the public who will suffer if charities are affected by large-scale cuts.

He commented: "We know there will be severe cuts in public spending in the coming months.

"But we should not be seen as a cheap or fluffy addition to core public services."

Mr Etherington's remarks follow the NCVO's suggestion that as many as 78 per cent of the country's charitable organisations are not currently being provided with any financial support from the government.

The council outlined this statistic and details concerning other charity funding trends in its UK Civil Society Almanac.

In other news, the body also took the opportunity earlier this week to announce the launch of its new Party Conference Bursary Scheme.
