FSB calls for more flexible maternity pay system

A small business group has called for both maternity and paternity pay to be reformed by ministers.

Changes should be made to the UK's current system of paternity and maternity pay in order to make it more flexible, one organisation has suggested.

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) believes that the country's smaller firms might benefit from the creation of a system of flexible leave which may cut down on complicated administration.

National chairman at the body, John Walker, has discussed some of the finer details of his organisation's proposals.

He stated: "Parents should be able to choose not only how long they take leave but how and when they receive the pay they are entitled to."

Meanwhile, among the other plans laid out in its Flexible Working: Small Business Solutions document, the small business organisation also feels that ministers should create a national definition to clarify what the term flexible working actually means.

In related news, separate research from the FSB recently suggested that this year could see as many as 300,000 people go into business for themselves.
