First-time buyers should have as much government support as possible to take their first step onto the property ladder, according to Metropolitan Home Ownership (MHO).

The affordable housing organisation said that as a result of banks tightening their lending criteria, there are many more people in the UK who can no longer afford to buy a new home.

Rebecca Robert-Hughes, research officer at MHO, said that government help will be instrumental in getting the housing market back on its feet, especially through alternatives such as shared ownership, as well as more investment in other schemes.

"The new shared ownership lease will encourage lenders, but we need to see more support for the intermediate market from both government and lenders," she commented.

According to the latest figures from Halifax, the average house price increased by 1.1 per cent in March to £168,521, marking the eighth increase in the last nine months.ADNFCR-2386-ID-19719087-ADNFCR
