Lack of bursary knowledge ''a barrier to poorer students''

Some of the financial complexities that surround higher education funding might prove a barrier to prospective students that are from poorer backgrounds, it has been noted.
According to Johnny Rich of Push.co.uk, there is often a lack of awareness about bursaries among those who are less well-off.
Mr Rich, editor of the university information advice website, commented: "Many of the poorer students ... don''t understand how bursaries [work] at all. The funding system is very complicated."

Universities offering courses which are more vocational in nature may notably be struggling to offer financial support to students, the expert suggests.
Regarding the reductions in higher education funding which are expected to hit universities in the near future, Mr Rich believes that it will be difficult for organisations not to be affected in some way.
The Higher Education Funding Council for England recently provisionally announced that capital finance of £562 million is to be provided to higher education institutions in the 2010/11 period.
