NASUWT: Teachers may see pay docked following travel chaos

NASUWT has listed a number of ways in which it believes teachers are being penalised after missing work because of the volcanic ash cloud.

Teachers who have recently been unable to return from holiday due to the volcanic ash cloud are being penalised in a number of ways, one union suggests.

Among a variety of measures that NASUWT believes are being proposed by employers, the organisation has noted that docking wages and overtime are being put forward by some.

However, the body's general secretary Chris Keates has highlighted the consequences that this kind of treatment might have in the longer term.

He stated: "If these employers persist with their attempts to penalise teachers, then clearly there will be ongoing repercussions in schools long after the volcanic ash has settled."

Mr Keates went on to say that some employers do not seem to be valuing the effort put in by their teaching staff.

Meanwhile, the union has been keeping a close eye on the continuing general election campaigns of the country's main political parties, offering its comments on their key manifesto proposals.
