The chief executive of the NCVO has expressed concerns about the size of forthcoming voluntary sector cuts.

The prospect of future cuts in the voluntary sector is causing concern for the chief executive of the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO).

According to Sir Stuart Etherington, the sector might have to deal with a "tidal wave" of funding cuts in the coming months.

Ministers will have to take action to prevent vulnerable members of the public from being disproportionately affected by these funding reductions, the expert believes.

He stated: "These cuts will have a detrimental effect on the services received by some of the most vulnerable people in our society."

However, Sir Stuart did appear to welcome certain aspects of the government's new proposals to create a 'Big Society', which were announced by prime minister David Cameron earlier this week.

Through his proposals, Mr Cameron appears to be aware of how important the voluntary sector is, Sir Stuart noted.

Meanwhile, the NCVO confirmed last week that it is set to offer free membership to the UK's student unions as part of a new scheme.
