The National Farmers' Union (NFU) has called for a stronger Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) in order to support a resilient EU farming sector.
At the unveiling of its policy paper on the future of the CAP after 2013, NFU president Peter Kendall said the policy needs to "continue steering farmers towards the market" while also providing them with support to help deal with the "shocks" posed by volatility.
"Agriculture is central to many of the challenges faced by the EU, but above all we need a policy to ensure that consumers in the EU and beyond have a secure and sustainable supply of food produced to high standards," he explained.
Mr Kendall added that the policy should do exactly what it pledges, while also maintaining productive capacity in Europe and providing a "buffer" against the threat posed to farmers by volatile markets.
Recently, the Royal Agricultural Society of England said that changes need to be made in the agricultural research and development sector to ensure the bond between science and practice remains firm.
