A variety of third sector organisations could be in line to benefit from a series of new measures proposed by the government.

Among the plans put forward by the UK''s communities secretary John Denham earlier this month, voluntary bodies might be given more opportunities to take ownership of disused buildings which are publicly owned.

Meanwhile, charities aiming to win contracts from local authorities may be supported by new advice which is being provided to councils.

Commenting on the measures, Mr Denham emphasised the importance of not-for-profit groups.

"They have greater trust invested in them, and they can represent individuals and communities whose voices may not always be heard," he stated.

Grant funding will also be provided to some local voluntary groups as part of the government''s plans.

Meanwhile, charitable groups have recently been encouraged by the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) and the Charities Aid Foundation to raise awareness among their donors about the need for them to consider inflation when giving money.
