Retirement age legislation 'is currently outdated'

The retirement age legislation that currently exists in the UK is "outdated", according to an expert.

The UK's existing default retirement age may be something of an anachronism, one expert suggests.

According to the Independent Age research and policy officer, Claire Nurden, negative stereotypes might also be reinforced by the current age, which stands at 65.

She said: "Older people should be able to retire more flexibly, allowing them to stop working in a way that adequately reflects their abilities as well as their needs."

A number of people are still willing to stay in employment, the expert added, despite the fact they are over 65.

The expertise that many older workers have is not taken into account by the default retirement age, Ms Nurden went on to say.

Her remarks follow the publication of recent Age UK survey results regarding the topic of forced retirement.

Forced retirement legislation should be abolished by ministers, 65 per cent of the poll's respondents are said to believe.
