Rics records rise in commercial farmland demand

Demand for commercial farmland has gone up in the last few months, it is believed.

Recent months have seen a rise in commercial farmland demand, according to research from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Rics).

The body's Rural Land Market Survey has revealed that when it comes to this type of land, demand has gone up instead of down for 47 per cent of surveyors over the course of the last six months.

In the previous six-month period reported on by Rics, this figure is only said to have reached 31 per cent.

Sue Steer, spokesperson for the organisation, feels that the supply of farmland is struggling to keep up with demand.

She stated: "Farmland continues to be viewed as 'recession proof' and we are seeing UK and overseas investors purchasing commercial farms as an alternative form of investment which is outperforming other markets."

Last month, Knight Frank revealed that its Farmland Index, which looks at the values of English land, stood at a level of £5,769 per acre.
