NFU expert: Taxpayers need to be told about CAP plus-points
Date posted: 13 Jul 2010
The plus-points of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) should be highlighted to European taxpayers, according to one NFU expert.

People living in Europe should be told about the various plus-points that the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) possesses, it has been suggested.
According to Tom Hind, head of economics and international affairs at the National Farmers' Union (NFU), affordable food from local sources is provided as a result of the CAP scheme.
He stated: "An open debate with society about the CAP is healthy, but it needs to be accompanied by an assessment of the numerous benefits the policy delivers."
Such benefits should be taken into account before any proposals are drawn up to reform the scheme, Mr Hind added.
He noted that political pressure is currently being placed on the policy as it stands.
The expert made his remarks following the publication of a report on CAP by George Lyon, which members of the European parliament recently voted in favour of.
Meurig Raymond, deputy president of the NFU, has previously highlighted the fact that the policy's future is currently a "hot topic" of discussion.
