In order to avoid the prospect of legal action, businesses are being encouraged to ensure that they tackle the risks of slips and trips.

According to Aviva's liability risk manager Phil Grace, those who have public premises need to check they are focusing enough of their attention on health and safety issues.

He stated: "Legal action brought as a result of an injury can be extremely damaging to businesses, especially where the public are involved."

Meanwhile, Mr Grace outlined some of the measures that firms should consider to avoid accidents.

The expert feels that any liquid spillages need to be clearly highlighted so that people are aware of them, while businesses should take the time to check that no obstacles placed are in the paths of their visitors.

Last month, Aviva also encouraged commercial property owners to tighten their security in order to address the risk of burglary during periods when their sites are unoccupied.
