While negatively impacting the country's students, higher education cutbacks could also have wider implications for the UK's global reputation, it has been suggested by one union.

Speaking in response to business secretary Vince Cable's recent speech at the Cass Business School, Sally Hunt of the University and College Union (UCU) has highlighted the threatening cuts that the nation's universities are being forced to face up to.

Ms Hunt, who acts as the organisation's general secretary, added: "This is the last thing this country needs if we want to remain a major player in the global knowledge economy."

Meanwhile she also went on to say that an entire "generation of learners" could be affected by the coalition's proposed funding reductions.

Speaking at the UCU's annual congress earlier in the week, Ms Hunt reiterated the important roles that universities can play in the UK, with the sector providing education to people operating in variety of industries.
