University funding cuts could have a knock-on effect on many of the country's businesses, an expert has suggested.

A number of British businesses could be negatively impacted by cutbacks in university funding, according to one expert.

The Universities UK chief executive Nicola Dandridge has suggested that universities have a significant role to play in the country's economy.

"Recent research shows a tremendous amount of collaborative investment between universities and businesses," she stated.

"There is a real concern that if public funding is cut, then that support for businesses will be lost."

At the present time, many of the UK's competitors appear to be investing more in their higher education institutions, Ms Dandridge added, with the expert recommending that the UK should follow suit.

Her remarks follow the publication of research from Universities UK, which suggests that many members of the public appear to be unaware of the economic contribution that the nation's universities make.

A sum of around £31 billion is currently contributed to the economy by universities, the organisation revealed.
