WI right to call for clear food labelling, NFU suggests

The National Farmers' Union believes that the Women's Institute is right to have requested the creation of clearer country-of-origin food labelling.

Food labelling proposals put forward by the Women's Institute (WI) have been given the support of the National Farmers' Union (NFU).
According to the union, the WI is right to ask for poultry, fish and meat products to be given compulsory country-of-origin labelling.
The UK's MEPs should take note of a recent WI resolution, according to the NFU's Gwyn Jones, which called for such labelling to be introduced.
"The WI resolution gives a timely signal to all UK MEPs to fully support the principle when they gather in Strasbourg in a fortnight to vote on this issue," Mr Jones, vice president of the organisation, stated.
Earlier this year, the NFU welcomed the outcome of a European Parliament Environment and Consumer Protection Committee vote, which called for country-of-origin labelling to be added to the likes of poultry products.
The union has been keen to raise awareness of this issue in Brussels in recent months by lobbying.
