Charities 'may need to explain spending to donors'

Charities need to be prepared to explain their spending decisions to donors if they are asked about their recent activities, it has been highlighted.

Charities are being alerted to the fact that donors appear to be increasingly keen to find out how their donations are being spent.

The Charity Commission chair Dame Suzi Leather suggests that charitable groups might be able to maintain people's trust by being transparent about their spending plans.

She stated: "Charities will need to respond to more discriminating donors by explaining their spending decisions to the public and by demonstrating what they achieve."

Her remarks follow the publication of new research from the commission, which addresses a number of issues relating to public confidence.

Of those people queried in the study, 42 per cent commented that the amount of trust they place in charities is mostly dictated by whether they can see "a reasonable proportion of a charity's income" going towards the cause it supports.

Earlier in the month, the Charity Commission announced that it is hoping to make all of its services available on the web by the year 2012.
