Construction sector growth 'may depend on office developments'

The future performance of the UK's construction industry is likely to be impacted by office developments, an expert suggests.

The country's office market might have an impact on the prospects of the UK's wider construction industry, according to one expert.
Construction News associate editor Alex Hawkes believes that retail markets may also have an effect on growth within the nation's building sector.
He stated: "The key thing would be to what extent the offices and retail markets really return to the construction sector and that, in turn, is about the strength of the UK economy as a whole."
On a larger scale, Mr Hawkes feels that the construction sector is likely to respond to events that occur in the wider economy.
In recent weeks, the expert feels that construction activity may have dropped in the UK to some extent because councils are no longer required to hit such large government housing targets.
Last month saw construction activity growth slow, according to the latest Markit/CIPS Construction Purchasing Managers' Index.
