Sophos expert: Many people unaware of phishing dangers

A number of consumers are unaware of the dangers posed by phishing, according to one expert.

People's awareness of phishing does not appear to be particularly strong, an expert suggests, with many unaware of the risks posed by this form of crime.

According to Sophos senior technology consultant Graham Cluley, consumers may not know about the online dangers that exist.

He stated: "There are many places, including your email address, where people could be after information from you for the purposes of identity theft."

While banking may be one area that criminals choose to target with phishing activity, social networking websites, online stores and even email accounts may also be under threat if people are not careful, the expert stated.

Fraudsters are likely to get further opportunities to carry out crimes as more people gain access to the web, Mr Cluley went on to suggest.

Last month, Symantec revealed that cyber-crime appears to be getting easier to undertake because of the development of new attack toolkits.
